WWF study reports dramatic biodiversity losses

The Living Planet Index (LPI) shows a significant decline in biodiversity by 52 per cent for the period from 1970 to 2010. On average, the worldwide number of investigated mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish in the past 40 years has halved. That means we have lost more biodiversity than previously thought. CITES - expansion of protection for sharks

Finally, manta rays and five shark species are under the international protection of the Endangered Species Convention (CITES). Almost a quarter - of the more than 400 shark and ray species - are threatened by overfishing.
